Rod MacBeth
Professional Rodeo Announcer
|
Rod was born in Birds Hill, Manitoba. Just north of Winnipeg. When he was 8, his family moved to
Calgary. This is where he took in his first Stampede and developed a love for rodeo!
At a younger age Rod tried riding some bucking horses and found that his love for rodeo did not
come with the needed talent! So he gave up on a career in the dirt and decided to swap rodeo for
radio. His broadcasting career took him to Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg and Terrace. Although
he was playing music and entertaining, Rod kept that love for rodeo, taking in shows when ever
he could.
In early 2000, Rod met Shannon Claypool, who got him a job, playing music during the Cloverdale
Rodeo. "Wow" Rod thought...I get to play music and watch rodeo at the same time...Life is great!
This is where he met Bob Tallman!
How did Rod get into rodeo announcing? Here it is in his own words:
In 2004, we were having sound system issues at Cloverdale and I was doing a mic check before
a show. When I was finished, Bob Tallman looked at me and asked why I wasn't announcing
rodeos? I said that I'd never really thought about it. We had a bit of a conversation and at the end
of it, Bob told me to give announcing a try! Feeling pretty darn proud of myself, I then told a
friend, Marnie Gigliotti, that Bob said that I should try rodeo announcing. Marnie said let me
know when you're ready, I'll put you to work and she did! My first show was a BCHSRA event in
Chilliwack, BC, in 2005. Even though I had never really thought of being a rodeo announcer, I
was always listening to those voices and personalities behind the mics. Personalities!!!
Yes...These guys were not just announcers, there were personalities. I had spent all this time
listening to Bob Tallman, Joe Carbury, Bill Kehler, Dave Paulson, Wayne Brooks and others.
That, it turns out had helped me immensely when it came to doing my first show . I'd like to think
I've taken a little bit of all those guys and added it to my own style. With that I continue to
develop as a rodeo personality. As a matter of fact, when I'm not working a show, you may see
me at another one, doing some homework. In 2009 I attended the Chad Nicholson Announcer
School. I though I was pretty good until I tried some of the exercises Chad put us through! Talk
about a few humbling moments. They say what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. Well, I
came out of those three days with a new attitude and much better skills and that, I am thankful for!
Besides rodeo, Rod has emcee'd numerous sporting events and functions.
Everything from water skiing events to an RCMP Regimental Ball. Including weddings, karaoke
nights(no I don't sing),Canadian and BC Fire Fighter Curling Championships, Major name
Concerts...too many to mention. Motorsports...both round and round and 1/4 mile, various charity
events, Snow and water skiing events, Logger Sports, Fashion Shows and more.
